Self-Guided Cycling Tips - Trip Duration

Starting your Alps 2 Ocean cycle at Tekapo’s alternate start is a great way to shorten day 1 or skip the heliflight across the Tasman River. For an alternate start, Follow the 54km trail section from the Tekapo township to Tekapo B power station to join up with the main trail at Lake Pukaki.

Mt John Summit Track

The Mt John Summit Track is a 3hr (return) loop starting just down the road from Tekapo Springs. Climb to the top of Mt John for spectacular panoramic views of the Alps, Lakes and the Mackenzie Basin. If walkings not your thing you can drive up to the Mt John Observatory and take in the view from there

Mt John Observatory

For one of the best star gazing experiences in the world head to Mt John Observatory. Tekapo’s clear skies are unspoilt by light pollution offering amazing views of the southern lights and if your really lucky the Aurora Australis. Learn about the stars on a tour and see them up close through a telescope or take a blanket and look up at the sky.
