Combine two of New Zealand’s most spectacular Great Rides, the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and the West Coast Wilderness Trail, all in one epic self-guided trip.

Explore the vast mountain vistas, striking turquoise lakes and rolling farmland of the Alps 2 Ocean before taking on the wild landscapes and rugged coastlines of the West Coast. More than just a cycling trip, you will experience NZ’s native forest and birdsong from a treetop walkway, spend a night at the picturesque Lake Coleridge and take in the history of ancient Maori trading routes and gold mining townships. 

Like all of our packaged trips, we organise all the hard bits, so all you need to think about is riding your bike!

A2O & West Coast Trails Itinerary

Day 1 - Transport from Christchurch to Twizel

We will pick you up in the morning and transfer you by private vehicle to Twizel, leaving you with the afternoon to explore this rural township before spending the night.

Stay the night in Twizel

* This itinerary allows you to fly into Christchurch the morning of your trip as we can work the departure time around you.

Day 2 - Mt Cook, Jollie River or Tekapo to Twizel

Our morning shuttle will take you to your chosen starting point on the trail. Cycle the golden tussock and lakeside trails through the Mackenzie Country to Twizel.

  • 55km cycle from Tekapo to Twizel
  • 61km cycle from Jollie River to Twizel
  • 80km cycle from Mt Cook to Twizel

Spend the night in Twizel.

Day 3 - Twizel to Lake Ohau Lodge (38km)

Cycle the sealed canal roads from Twizel to the edge of Lake Ohau before following the dedicated lakeside cycle trail around to Lake Ohau Lodge.

Spend the night at Lake Ohau.

Day 4 - Lake Ohau Lodge to Omarama (42km)

Cycle to the top of the Tarnbrae highpoint, overlooking Lake Ohau and the Mackenzie plains before heading downhill through the Quailburn. Take a 7km detour to the Clay Cliff rock formations if you have time, or relax in the wood fired Omarama Hot Tubs in town.

Spend the night in Omarama.

Day 5 - Omarama to Kurow (68km)

One of the most scenic days on the trail, todays ride takes you along the stunning backcountry roads of Lake Benmore and Lake Aviemore. Take in the spectacular views of the Waitaki Valley from the top of the Benmore Dam and cycle through to Kurow.

Spend the night in Kurow.

Day 6 - Kurow to Duntroon (40km)

Follow the trail along the Waitaki River, passing through the vineyard just out of Kurow’s township (a great spot for a coffee stop!). After about 23km you will come to the Maori Rock art site before continuing on through the wetlands into Duntroon.

Depending on the accommodation available – spend the night in Duntroon or Rural Duntroon.

Day 7 - Duntroon to Oamaru (50km)

The final day on the trail will take you through sweeping farmlands, past the Elephant Rock formations and Rakis Railway Tunnel, and into the seaside town of Oamaru where the trail ends at Friendly Bay at the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy a celebratory drink at Scott’s Brewery or explore Oamaru’s unique Victorian precinct.

Spend the night in Oamaru.

Day 8 - Transfer Oamaru to Lake Coleridge

We will pick you up at midday after you have explored the Victorian Centre and transfer you to Lake Coleridge, a little known hideaway in the Rakaia River where we overnight at the lodge.

Stay the night at Lake Coleridge.

Day 9 - Cycle Ross to Hokitika

This morning we drive through the spectacular Arthurs Pass before descending into the West Coast. After arriving at Hokitika, we collect our bikes and travel to Ross for a 33km cycle back to Hokitika that afternoon. En route we take in the Tree Top walk experience, overlooking Lake Mahinapua.

Stay the night in Hokitika.

Day 10 - Cycle Hokitika to Milltown (36km)

Follow the trail out of Hokitika inland through small rural townships. Smooth flowing bush tracks lead to the beautiful Lake Kaniere before winding through the Arahura Valley and Milltown area where you can visit Cowboy Paradise for afternoon refreshments. However, we urge you to make a donation if you use their bathroom facilities. Our shuttle will bring you back to Hokitika for a second night.

Stay the night in Hokitika.

Day 11 - Cycle Milltown to Kumara (35km)

Take our morning shuttle from Hokitika to Milltown. Begin the day’s ride with a short climb up to Kawhaka Pass with stunning views down the coast. From here the trail descends down to Kumara and the beautifully restored Theatre Royal Hotel.

Stay the night in Kumara.

Day 12 - Cycle Kumara to Greymouth (28km)

The final days ride takes will take you to the Taramakau Bridge and along the coast into Greymouth. A final celebratory drink and lunch at Monteith’s Brewery Bar before boarding the TranzAlpine Express back to Christchurch.

Heli-flight across the Tasman River

If you are starting your ride from Mt Cook Village, you will need to take a heli-flight to join up with the trail on the other side of the Tasman River This is included in the A2O Express package

If for any reason the heli-flight is cancelled, Heliworks will communicate with our Twizel Depot and we will contact you directly to coordinate a shuttle to the best possible alternate starting point on the trail.

Scenic Waterways Experience

West Coast Scenic Waterways is a family run operation located in the remote wilderness of Lake Mahinapua. Treat yourself to a boat cruise on the lake, capture the picturesque views of the Southern Alps from your self-contained cottage and indulge in on-site dining. The Scenic Waterways experience is included on night 1 of our West Coast Premium package, or you can upgrade any standard or superior trip package to include it.
