With so many starting options on the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail it can be difficult to decide which option is best for you.  So… we have made it easy! Take a look at our overview of the 3 most popular starting options below.

Mt Cook Village Start

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Distance from Mt Cook Village to Twizel: 80km
  • Trail Conditions:
    • 45% Gravel Road
    • 32% Smooth Shingle
    • 16% Rough Shingle
    • 6% Sealed Road
  • Starting at Mt Cook Village requires a heli-flight to join up with the trail on the other side of the Tasman River
  • E-bike upgrade available for this section

Approximate ride duration:

Jollie River Carpark

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Distance from Jollie River to Twizel: 61km
  • Trail Conditions:
    • 45% Gravel Road
    • 32% Smooth Shingle
    • 16% Rough Shingle
    • 6% Sealed Road
  • E-bike upgrade available for this section
  • A heli-flight is not required as you begin your ride on the other side of the Tasman River (see map)

Approximate ride duration:

Tekapo Village

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Distance from Tekapo to Twizel: 54km
  • A heli-flight is not required as you begin your ride at Lake Tekapo village
  • You get to enjoy one of the most spectacular sections of the trail around the bottom of Lake Pukaki, looking back to a backdrop of Aoraki, Mt Cook
