Alps 2 Ocean – Post Trip Interview

Erin Hill and Friends

We came in contact with Erin and the remnants of her group whilst in the midst of dealing with the closing of the country to international visitors. So while we were cancelling out those riders, suddenly we began to deal with a group of 6 females desperate to rescue plans to ride the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail and with an impressive amount of alcohol masquerading as accompanying luggage!

Tell us about how your group came about riding the Alps 2 Ocean at the exact time of the lock down?

“Our planned trip was to be fully guided with 10 friends from varying locations. Every year our group gets together to do something different.  Last year we walked the entire Abel Tasman in 4 days. When we found out that our guided departure was unable to happen, Cycle Journeys were able to reinstate accommodation bookings and set us up to ride instead. Sadly, three days after we started, the trail lock down occurred and the staff at Cycle Journeys then had to find ways to get us back home again. Sad – but we will be back.”

You didn’t get to finish the trip – but tell us your impressions of the trail?

“The accommodation at Braemar was lovely with lovely fresh crisp linen and great facilities, sublime views so we were well chuffed.  We enjoyed a bike ride down to the beach that afternoon, purely to try to make a dent in our excess baggage.  At dusk we rode back up to the Shearers Cottage for dinner and wine.  We had a fun evening playing charades.  The ride out to Twizel was very pretty the road was quiet and the trails were well sign posted so we just took our time and cruised along stopping to take some fun photos.”

Of the time spent on the trail – What was your highlight?

“Its hard to pin point to a high light because it was all fun, we are a group of hard working ladies who just love to get away on short excursions and have fun. We love home stays on high country stations that’s our kind of thing.   Sensational food, good wine/gin with exercise and laughter is the high on the Agenda!”

What would the next trail on your groups bucket list be?

“Personally I would like to tick off the Tasman Great taste trail and the Around the Mountains trail.  I am still waiting on the girls to respond with their answers on that one. “

“Thanks Geoff and the team at Cycle Journeys. Here’s wishing you all a safe transition back after lock down.  I am sure we will all be back and considering booking a ride towards the end of the year, well when the sun is shining back on Aotearoa again.”
