The pace of trail build is set to rapidly increase as the Alps 2 Ocean seeks to complete the off-road section from Lake Aviemore down to Kurow.
Those who have ridden the trail will remember the peaceful ride on the north side of Lake Aviemore with a flat sealed road taking us past the many summer camping spots on the lake edge. Once the riders crossed the dam, the trail was forced onto State Highway 83 for the 8kms down to Waitaki Village and then a further 8kms into Kurow, passing several pinch points along the way.
Project manager Hamish Seaton hopes these sections will start construction over the next 2-3 months and has targeted a completion date pre Christmas 2017! This work fits well with the recent completion of 3-4 other sections between Dunrtroon and Oamaru, meaning this section is now almost 85% off-road for the coming season.
Taking this section off road has been a slow process, working with amazing landowners who have proven to be great partners for the trail. Requests to route the trail through their property has generally been greeted with enthusiastic support as the locals take the Alps 2 Ocean to heart and embrace the project.
With so many sections of the trail coming off the road, this summer is a great time to ride the trail. Make sure you talk to us about planning your Alps 2 Ocean cycling holiday today.
