West Coast Wilderness Trail – Post Trip Interview

Dianne and Peter recently completed the West Coast Wilderness Trail. Due to COVID-19, their overseas trip was cancelled – so what better way than to explore their own backyard by bike. We caught up with Dianne recently to ask her a few questions about their experience on the Wilderness Trail.

Why did you choose to cycle the West Coast Wilderness Trail?

We usually spend our holiday on the Sunshine Coast each year, but due to Covid-19 this was not going to happen. We saw a post on Facebook about the West Coast Wilderness Trail and thought “Yes! That’s what we can do this year instead”. A great decision!

Do you have any highlights from the trail?

We talked about highlights a lot on the final night with other trail blazers. Everyone had a different favourite, and to be honest it was very hard to choose just one. For me it was the leg that included the Water Race. I’m a great lover of ferns/water features and native forest so it was definitely “my happy place”. My husband Peter most enjoyed the perfect reflections we saw when we went out on the Scenic Waterways Lake Mahinapua boat trip with Gavin.

What was your favourite accommodation location on the trail?

Gosh another difficult one – they were all so different. We had two nights at Scenic Waterways and Gavin and Cindy could not have done more for us all. They were so welcoming and could I say that Cindy is one fabulous cook. We even borrowed their car!

What was the one thing you would have changed about your planning in retrospect?

Can’t think of anything – it was a blast from start to finish.

Have you done any/many other trails and if so what was the best of them?

The West Coast Wilderness Trail is the first cycle trail we have done, and what a way to start. We definitely plan to do the Alps2Ocean next year – probably in the winter time too!
