We’re incredibly excited to announce, as of December 1st 2021, we will be operating on Tasman’s Great Taste Trail – an exciting 4 – 5 day 204km circular trail based in the Nelson Tasman region.
To answer your questions about “what trail do we ride next?” – or “what other trails do you operate on?” We’ve been riding some of the Great Rides of New Zealand over the past year and are super excited to announce our plans for Cycle Journeys to be on the Great Taste Trail.
Opening on a third trail allows us to offer you more great trail rides, providing more seasonal options and giving our Reservations Team even more reasons to be excited. We have been following the Great Taste Trail’s construction plans and feel it is a fantastic trail, as the final bridge in the remote Baton Valley allows the Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust to create a continuous multi-day loop ride.
It covers some of the regions best cycle trails, food and beverage offerings, all combined with beautiful boutique accommodation and welcoming hosts—a wildly diverse trail with roadside wineries, historic railway tunnels, remote valleys and quiet rural roads. The trail is adorned with orchards, roadside fruit stalls the way we used to have, beautiful beaches and regenerating wetlands.
The stunning beaches and trails of the Abel Tasman National Park are on the doorstep, providing opportunities for walking and kayaking or just hanging out.
Nelson Tasman Great Taste…
Tasman is a region of senses; Nelson is a region of art. The region delivers on its promise early on Day 1 with the eclectic Pic’s Peanut Butter World, and then onwards with tasting platters, wines, craft beers, roadside stalls and orchards, blueberries, kiwifruit and wineries.
Nelson city is deserving of time to explore its galleries and art as well as the history and numerous riverside cycle paths. Our itineraries provide a Fresh way of looking at and consuming the best of the region in an unforgettable cycle holiday.
Undoubtedly the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park is glorious with its spectacular golden beaches and easy walking trails; we strongly urge you to add a day or two to journey into the park to enjoy. The regions sea kayaking options varying from day to multi-day paddling, while the three-day guided walk with Wilsons Abel Tasman is a spectacular way to combine the walking with two luxury lodges. Other options include a half-day cultural Waka experience providing an insight into the skills and etiquette (tikanga) required of the waka paddling, try canyoning in the park or even a skydiving experience against the backdrop of Tasman Bay.
As a starter for this season, we are offering three itineraries. Our 5-day Great Taste Explorer is a relaxed circuit, an ideal ride to explore, taste and relax.
Great Taste Delight and Great Taste Energiser focus more on riding with their 4-day itineraries without losing the beauty or opportunities to sample the regions produce. Our Delight itinerary includes two longer cycling days to start with, finishing with more time in Mapua and Nelson. Our Energiser itinerary provides a chance to have a well-being focus with an optional Yoga experience on Day 3.
All our itineraries allow for the chance to add a day or few to explore any of the great adventure experiences within the Abel Tasman National Park.
I (Nicole) had the chance to ride the trail in June with Libby, Kelly and Magan from the Reservations Team, and we’re going to bring you our thoughts on each of the sections in our next Great Taste Trail Newsletter!
Until then, stay safe and keep pedalling!
