New Off-road Trail Section: Aviemore to Kurow Opening Soon!
Be one of the first to (legally) ride the new trail section on the Alps 2 Ocean from Lake Aviemore down to Kurow on February the 8th. This 15 kms section has been nearly a year in making and it will remove one of the sections on the road that have been a source of concern as traffic numbers have grown.
The new trail section starts once you have ridden over the Aviemore Dam and involves picking the trail up on the southern side of the highway. Riding above the road cutting takes you to the old remnants of an early house before dropping down beside one of the early winery plantings. From there it’s into the Waitaki Village and the beautiful trail weaves alongside Lake Waitaki backing up from the Dam.
The official opening is happening at 2pm on Saturday the 8th of February at the Waitaki Village carpark. This overlooks the Waitaki Dam, the last such dam built with shovel and wheel borrow. This location is part of the raw and diverse history that accompanies the Waitaki valley.
Official Opening Arrangements
Meet at the Waitaki Village from 1.30pm ready for the official event. There will some stories backgrounding the dam, the link to Dunkirk and the local pines that were planted there – as well as the official opening. If you want to ride the new trail section, the options are as follows:
Park up at Kurow and ride up to Waitaki Village pre the opening – (about 8km). Or….
Bring your bike and vehicle directly to the Village pre the opening.
We will be offering hire bikes and shuttle transfers, which we will ask for a $10 donation. All funds raised will go to the Kurow Wetlands Trust. A 4pm start at Aviemore should see you at Kurow around 5.30pm.
