Our Newest Team Members Experience the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail

Grabbing the opportunity to get into the great outdoors and away from the office, our newest staff members; Noha and Rachel took the opportunity to ride several sections of the Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail. On day one they rode from Duntroon to Oamaru and on day two from Lake Ohau to Twizel.

Rachel, our customer service rep, shares her experience of the trail…

Day One: Duntoon – Oamaru

The weather was brisk in the morning and beautifully sunny. There was snow on the mountains which made for many beautiful photos and therefore excuses to stop. The first day we cycled from Father Ted’s in Duntroon to Oamaru. What a cute wee town Duntroon is!  All the accommodation options we visited there were just fabulous. We had a bike briefing and were fitted to our E-Bikes and set off on our 54km ride very eager.

Past the Takiroa Maori Rock Art site, past Elephant rocks and a few ups and downs we came to the Tunnel. My advice to you is to take off your sunglasses when going through the tunnel! It is very dark and we used our cell phone lights and pushed our bikes.

One of the many highlights of this day was riding through the lush green countryside where 3 lambs ran alongside us the entire length of their paddock. Super cute! Deciding not to stop for coffee (or wine) in Enfield we pushed on to Oamaru, biking through the historic downtown. Of course we had to experience the iconic photo frame at the end of the trail and took some quick snaps.

Day Two: Lake Ohau to Twizel

Again we were blessed with stunning weather for our second day which we chose to ride in the opposite direction to normal, due to our having to catch a shuttle back to Christchurch. Firstly, we had a look around Lake Ohau Lodge – amazing! The views! The coffee! The views!

We then hopped on our bikes and cycled up the Quailburn. We stopped a lot to take photos as ….well…. just WOW! We definitely felt great as we cycled right up the hill and were very thankful for our E-bikes as we reached the top. From there we turned around and after an exhilarating downhill we cycled around Lake Ohau. There were many spots where we could have stopped for our picnic lunch but in the end we chose a spot looking out toward Mt Cook. The last few kms were flat and fast along the canals to our Twizel depot.

“Every time I head down to Twizel from Christchurch I am reminded what an amazing country we live in. The views, the scenery, the mountains and the terrain are all stunning.”
