West Coast trail developments mean the 132km West Coast Wilderness Trail is just getting better and better! Trail fairies have been working hard, opening up access to even more West Coast native bush and stunning viewpoints. New sections are taking the trail away from busy highway sections and showcasing more of the beautiful landscape that the West Coast is famous for.
Mahinapua Creek Extension
The section between Lake Mahinapua and Hokitika was completed and officially opened at the end of last year. Since then, reviews from riders have been very positive. This new section from outside Scenic Waterways, through to the Mahinapua Tramline is 4km of stunning delight. Cycle trail riding as we always dreamed it could be! It winds through native bush and wetlands with fantastic viewing points.
Riders have confirmed that the surface is really good, which highlights the great deal of work that has been done. Our founders, Geoff and Shelley Gabites rode this section of the trail at the beginning of the year, confirming the rave reviews. This is an outstanding first class wetland area of New Zealand, and cycling is the perfect way to experience it. Ride this section as part of the full 132 km trail ride or as a day ride from Hokitika out to the TreeTop walk and back (approximately 3 – 5 hours round trip).
Old Christchurch Road Diversion
Work is progressing well with contractors nearing completion of a new diversion near the Kawhaka intake. This new section will take the trail off a dusty, busy and dangerous section on Old Christchurch Road. 700m of the 1100m section is complete, and they are hoping to have it open before Easter for all to enjoy.
The trail follows the historic Watermans Race and passes two original timber structures on the alignment. Word is that there will be a few corners and ‘humptys’ to make this new section rather invigorating. There will still be 400m on the road, in a safer zone, as unfortunately budget constraints wouldn’t allow a total solution. However, this new section will be a great enhancement to the trail.
Ride the Trail all Year Round
We have had a busy summer season on the West Coast Wilderness Trail so far, and we have noticed more group bookings, compared to the individuals or couples that book for the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail. The great thing about the West Coast is that the trail can be ridden all year round. We are looking forward to a busy finish to the summer season carrying on into autumn and winter. Watch this space for our West Coast Winter Packages to be confirmed.
